Breaching Whales

Seeing a whale launch itself fully out of the water is a truly awe-inspiring sight. This leaping behaviour is known as breaching. These majestic creatures, some as large as buses, gracefully propel their massive bodies into the air:   a spectacle that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who witnesses it. But what exactly compels whales to engage in this remarkable behaviour?

A whale likes to be heard by other whales who may be around

One of the main reasons is communication. When a whale breaches, it creates a loud splash that can be heard by other whales for miles around. This helps to alert other members of the pod to the whale’s presence, and may even convey important information, such as the location of food sources or potential dangers.

Breaching may also play a role in social interactions, particularly during mating season. Male humpback whales, for example, are known to breach frequently as a way of attracting potential mates and establishing dominance within their social group. The sheer power and athleticism displayed in a breaching event can be an impressive display of a whale’s strength and vigour.

Another possible explanation is that whales breach in order to remove parasites from their skin. As whales spend most of their time submerged, their skin can become covered in barnacles, algae and other marine organisms. By launching themselves into the air, whales may be able to dislodge these unwanted hitchhikers, helping to keep their skin clean and healthy.

Some scientists believe that whales may breach simply for the pure enjoyment of it. Much like humans engage in playful or recreational activities, whales may breach as a form of play, or to experience the thrill of launching themselves into the air. This behaviour is often seen in younger whales, as they explore and experiment with the limits of their physical abilities.

Watching a breaching whale is truly mesmerising!

Regardless of the reasons behind it, the sight of a whale breaching is truly mesmerising. Whether it’s a massive humpback clearing the waves, a graceful orca cartwheeling through the air, or a curious calf testing its jumping skills, these spectacular displays serve as a powerful reminder of the wonder and complexity of the natural world.
