A Lesson In Independence

Dear Aaron, Since you seem to have forgotten you are only 13 and I’m the parent, and that you won’t be controlled, I guess you will need a lesson in independence. Also, as you threw in my face that you are making money now, it will be easier to buy back all the items I bought for you in the past. If you would like your bedroom lamp, light bulbs, or access to the Internet, you will need to pay your share of the costs:

Rent: $430

Electricity: $116

Internet: $21

Food: $150

This is a section of a letter recently written by single American mother, Estella Havisham, to her 13-year-old son, Aaron. The mother and son had argued over Aaron’s failure to follow his mother’s ground rules.

Aaron had lied to his mother about completing his homework. He had also upset her by saying he could make his own money through videos he had uploaded onto YouTube. Estella decided to write the letter to Aaron and left it on the kitchen table for him to read.

Whilst Aaron was out of the house, his mother took items she had bought for him from his room including a computer, a lamp, and light bulbs. When Aaron returned home and read the letter, he tore it up and threw it onto the floor. Estella decided to upload a copy of the letter to her friends. Somehow it went viral. The letter was shared over 162,000 times and attracted lots of debate.

Since their argument and the posting of the letter online, the relationship between mother and son is said to be improving. However, Estella has described that relationship as, “a work in progress.”
