Fresh from the Freezer

According to the British Frozen Food Federation, frozen food is just as nutritious as its fresh counterparts. This is great news, especially in today’s fast-paced world where finding the time to cook a proper meal can be a challenge. If you’re feeling hungry, but there’s no one at home to cook for you and it’s too hot to venture out to your local restaurant, you could try looking into your freezer. You may just find a tasty pre-made meal waiting to be enjoyed.

Freezing leftover food is an excellent way to reduce waste. Rather than letting good food spoil, you can simply pop it in the freezer for another day. This not only saves you money but also helps the environment by cutting down on food that ends up in landfills.

Being able to buy ready-prepared frozen meals from the supermarket is another convenient option, though these may not be as healthy as homemade.

The concept of freezing food for later consumption has been around for over a century. It can be credited to a man named Clarence Birdseye (right), who was working as a fur trader in Canada to help pay for his university education. While there, he observed the local indigenous people preserving fresh fish by freezing them in barrels of sea water. The fish would quickly freeze in the low temperatures and could then be eaten whenever needed.

Inspired by this, Birdseye returned to America and invested a mere $7 in an electric fan, buckets of salt water, and blocks of ice. Through trial and error, he learned how to effectively freeze food in waxed cardboard boxes. However, when he tried to sell his frozen food products in 1924, no one seemed interested, and he soon went bankrupt.

Freezing techniques enable fresh fish to be delivered to anywhere in the world

Undeterred, Birdseye persevered, and just five years later, he managed to sell his new food-freezing company for a staggering $22 million. This company later became known as the iconic “Captain Birdseye” brand. Birdseye’s pioneering work paved the way for the modern frozen food industry, which is now worth billions of dollars globally.

Today, we can open our freezers and find a wide variety of ready-made meals, from classic TV dinners to gourmet-style dishes. As long as you have a microwave oven, you can enjoy a hot, nutritious meal in a matter of minutes. No more slaving away in the kitchen for hours on end! Birdseye’s invention has truly revolutionized the way we think about and consume food.
