About Summer Course
Introduction
Taking place every summer since 2004, Typhoon Club Summer Courses have become a ‘must do’ for thousands of Hong Kong P1 to P6 students.
Students work in small groups under the supervision of their team leader. Courses provide an opportunity for students to socially engage with one another when visiting places of educational interest each morning. Under the guidance of a native English teacher, they write about their experience in the afternoon either within a classroom or Zoom format depending on the circumstances. Each student’s writing is collected, edited and developed into a 12-page print magazine.
Schedule
Students gather at the designated meeting point each morning and are greeted by their team leader. The Typhoon Club coach takes them to a different location of educational interest each day. Upon arrival, students complete specially designed worksheets with the support and guidance of their team leader. Mondays and Fridays are full-day excursions. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays begin with a morning excursion followed by a 90-minute writing lesson in the afternoons. These are delivered in classrooms in Causeway Bay. Throughout the day, students are encouraged to socialise and engage within an English-speaking environment.

Lessons will take place in a Causeway Bay classroom on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each lesson lasts 90-minutes. Exact times and location will be confirmed before the commencement of each course. Lessons are delivered by a native English teacher who will be assisted by two assistant teachers who will help the students with their writing.
We are very proud of our team leaders. Many of them have since moved on to become teachers in both the local and international sectors. We recruit from local or international universities. Some are native English speakers, others bi or trilingual.
Currently, we are planning on a ratio of one team leader to four to six students.
Yes, we will provide lunch for five days.
As in previous years, parents should drop-off their children every morning at Kowloon Tong MTR station at the allocated time. Parents will be advised of afternoon pick-up times when their child’s place is confirmed. Parents will be notified of any pick-up or drop-off changes via their child’s team leader.
Students are allocated into small groups in consultation with their parents for the morning external visits. For classroom lessons, students will be divided into junior and senior groups and lessons will be delivered accordingly.
Lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday last 90-minutes. Students will be guided by a native English teacher on how to write text for their magazine. Students will also be provided at the beginning of each course with materials that can help them with their writing. Dedicated videos will also be made to assist the students. Students will be asked to submit their writing at the end of each lesson.
It is important students bring:
1. A bottle of water each day to keep hydrated;
2. A clipboard and some pens for writing;
3. Hand sanitizer;
4. A spare mask;
5. Sunblock;
6. Mosquito repellent.
This is an English-speaking programme and all communication will be conducted in English. There will, however, be Chinese speakers with us who can help translate if necessary.
We follow the guidelines of the Hong Kong Education Bureau. Team leaders will communicate with parents in the event the weather affects our programme. Classroom lessons will be replaced by Zoom lessons. Regrettably, cancelled external visits cannot be re-scheduled.
