Do You Snore?

If you have any snorers in your family, you’re probably all too familiar with the annoying sound of snoring. But did you know that snoring can actually be dangerous, not just aggravating?

Trying to sleep when someone close by is snoring leads to a sleepless night

Recent scientific studies have shown that young people who snore while they sleep are much more likely to struggle at school compared to their non-snoring peers. Tests carried out in both Germany and the US have found that children who snore are 3 to 4 times more likely to get poor grades than their friends who don’t snore.

Young people who snore while they sleep are much more likely to struggle at school

The reason for this is that snoring prevents people from getting a good night’s sleep. When someone snores, it means their breathing is being obstructed, so they aren’t getting enough oxygen. Deep, restful sleep is absolutely crucial for a young person’s  mental and physical development. If that person isn’t sleeping properly, their mind won’t have the chance to properly recover from the day’s activities.

This lack of quality sleep can cause young people who snore to have trouble concentrating in class. They may also start behaving badly or become hyperactive. Their academic performance suffers as a result.

Sleep apnea is a treatable condition

Snoring is sometimes a symptom of a condition called sleep apnea. This is where a person’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, preventing them from reaching the deep sleep stages that are so important. Sleep apnea can be very damaging to a person’s health if left untreated.

Luckily, sleep apnea is a treatable condition. People with sleep apnea can have a minor operation to open up their airways, which helps them sleep better. Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can also make a big difference.

So, the next time you hear someone snoring up a storm, don’t just write it off as an annoyance. It could be a sign of a more serious problem, especially if it’s a young person who is doing the snoring. It’s worth getting it checked out by a doctor, for the sake of their health and their schoolwork.
