June is an exciting month for dragon boat racing, a vibrant sport that has captured the hearts of many around the world. Originally, this annual festival was celebrated only in Hong Kong and a few coastal cities. However, Hong Kong took the initiative to introduce international races, and now dragon boat racing is enjoyed globally by people of all ages.

The Origins of Dragon Boat Racing
The history of dragon boat racing dates back to ancient times, but the modern races we know today began in 1976. The first official race took place in the typhoon shelter at Shau Kei Wan, featuring nine local teams and one team from Japan.
This initial event sparked a passion for dragon boat racing, leading it to evolve into a major sporting event.
Growth of the Sport
As the popularity of dragon boat racing surged, the event was moved to the picturesque Victoria Harbour to accommodate more participants and spectators.

By 1997, the festival had expanded significantly, boasting 133 teams, with 36 of them coming from overseas. Today, there are over 200 dragon boat teams in Hong Kong alone, many of which practise every week in preparation for the exciting competitions held in June.
International Participation
One of the reasons so many teams come to Hong Kong from overseas is the promotion of dragon boat racing by the Hong Kong Tourist Association. They have successfully raised awareness of this unique sport, allowing people around the world to connect with Hong Kong’s rich culture and sporting traditions. Countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United States have embraced dragon boat racing, and events are now held in cities including Sydney, London, and New York.

These international races not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of community among participants and spectators. People gather to watch the thrilling races, cheering on their favourite teams while learning about the cultural significance of dragon boat racing. Many spectators have the chance to experience a piece of Hong Kong right in their own hometowns, making the sport even more special.
With its roots in teamwork, culture, and community spirit, dragon boat racing continues to thrive, bringing people together from all corners of the globe. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the excitement of dragon boat racing in June is an experience not to be missed!
