Edvard Munch was a Norwegian artist who lived from 1863 to 1944. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the art movement known as Expressionism, which focused on the inner emotions and experiences of the artist.
Munch was born in a small town called Løten, located in the eastern part of Norway. His childhood was not an easy one. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was just five years old, and his older sister also passed away from the same illness a few years later. These tragic events had a profound impact on the young Munch, and the themes of death, anxiety, and human suffering would go on to feature heavily in his art.
Despite these difficult beginnings, Munch showed an early talent for drawing and painting. He attended the Royal School of Art and Design in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, and began to develop his unique style, which was heavily influenced by the works of Post-Impressionist painters like Vincent van Gogh and French Symbolist artists.

Munch’s most famous painting, “The Scream,” (right) is a prime example of his Expressionist style. Depicting a figure with a distorted, anguished face against a swirling, psychedelic background, the painting captures the human experience of intense emotional turmoil and anxiety. The Scream has become one of the most recognisable works of art in the world, and it has been the subject of numerous parodies and references in popular culture.
Other notable works by Munch include “The Sick Child,” (left) “Anxiety,” and “Vampire,” all of which explore the darker, more unsettling aspects of the human condition.
Munch’s paintings are characterised by bold, expressive brushstrokes, distorted figures, and a vivid use of colour that reflects the artist’s inner emotional state.
Despite the sometimes disturbing nature of his art, Munch’s paintings have become hugely popular and influential, particularly in the 20th century. His ability to capture the raw, primal emotions of the human experience has resonated with audiences around the world, and his work has been celebrated for its powerful and evocative qualities.
