The Milky Way

The Milky Way is a stunning spiral galaxy that contains our solar system, and it is one of the most beautiful sights in the night sky. With its bright band of stars and cosmic dust, the Milky Way has inspired countless photographers and stargazers around the world. Each year, the annual Milky Way Photographer of the Year competition, organised by the travel photography blog Capture the Atlas, showcases the best photographs of this celestial marvel.

“RAINBOW VALLEY” – BAILLIE FARLEY

The Milky Way is not just a collection of stars; it is a vast system that holds billions of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. It is believed to have formed over 13 billion years ago from clouds of gas and dust that collapsed under their own gravity. This process created stars and other elements that eventually led to the formation of solar systems, including our own. Understanding the Milky Way helps us learn more about the universe and our place within it.

“TOMBOLO MILKY WAY” – MARC RASSEL

Capture the Atlas publishes its Milky Way Photographer of the Year collection each May, coinciding with the peak season for observing this magnificent galaxy. The 2024 edition features 25 stunning images taken by photographers from 19 different countries, including the United States, Australia, and France. A total of 5,000 entries were submitted, making the selection process highly competitive.

“A CLEAR WELCOME” – FRANCESCO DALL’OLMO

Photographers are drawn to the Milky Way for its beauty and the challenge it presents. The best time to capture the Milky Way is usually between May and June, when it is most visible. However, it is essential to find a dark location, away from city lights, to appreciate its full glory. Higher elevations are often recommended for clearer views of the night sky.

“ATMOSPHERIC FIREWORKS” – JULIEN LOOTEN

Dan Zafra, the editor of Capture the Atlas, curates these breathtaking images throughout the year. He looks for not only the work of established photographers but also emerging talents and new locations that haven’t been widely photographed before. The 2024 collection includes fresh perspectives from places including Oman and Bulgaria.

“DESERT BLOOM” – MARCIN ZAJAC

The joy of photographing the Milky Way lies in the connection it fosters with nature and the universe. Each photograph tells a story, capturing the imagination and inspiring others to explore the beauty of the night sky. Capture the Atlas aims to help aspiring photographers improve their skills while igniting a passion for astrophotography.
