Many countries have a sport or activity that helps everyone celebrate a National or Independence Day, and Indonesia is no exception. Their activity is quite challenging and not everyone will be up to it – just like Hong Kong’s Dragon Boat Racing. It is certainly fun to watch though!
What is it and where is it taking place?
It’s a celebration that takes place in Indonesia on 17th August each year. That’s Indonesia’s Independence Day. The activity is called Panjat Pinang.
What takes place?
Betel nut trees are cut down and branches are cut off. Holes are dug into the ground and the betel nut tree trunks are placed into it so they stand vertically. Some prizes are placed at the top of the tree trunks. The tree trunks are then covered in a greasy oil. People are invited to climb to the top of the trunk and collect the prizes.
Who thought of such an activity?
Indonesia was once a colony of the Dutch. In the early 1700s, the Dutch introduced Panjat Pinang and watched the locals try to climb. It was not really very nice as it was entertainment for the Dutch and probably not very entertaining for the Indonesians doing the climbing.
What kind of prizes can you win?
Prizes can be very simple like buckets, clothing and food. However, sometimes bicycles are placed as prizes.
Is there really anything positive about Panjat Pinang?
Some people say that it encourages teamwork. Participants worked out early on that it is very difficult to climb a tall greasy pole on your own. It’s better to work in a team. Today, a team of four people help each other climb to the top to collect the prizes. They then share the prizes.
Anything else that is positive?
Panjat Pinang is enjoyed today to celebrate Indonesia’s independence. It has become part of Indonesia’s popular culture. The Dutch are no longer governing Indonesia. Perhaps there is an irony in this, which allows everyone to be happy for their own different reasons.
